Shopping for Pet Supplies Online

Posted by admin on 09/03/10 in dog supplies

Online shopping has made life enormously more convenient in many regards. No longer do consumers need to drive for miles, burning expensive gas and possibly an entire weekend day going from one store to another. Pet supplies are one of the most convenient items to purchase online, for several reasons.

Anyone who lives with a cat knows the perils of suddenly changing the animal’s food. Cats prefer a consistent diet of a food they like and changing that food can cause digestive, and other, problems. Most cat owners like to buy a large quantity of their pet’s preferred food and shopping online allows them to do this, at a discount, without hunting around for a store that carries their pet’s preferred brand.

Those who own more exotic pets have a special set of needs where pet supplies are concerned. Sensitive animals such as reptiles, tropical fish, birds and other animals require very specific items for their care that are often not available at most pet stores. Online pet stores tend to carry a wide range of items for just about any pet’s needs. For these pet owners, in particular, buying pet supplies online is enormously more convenient and, almost always, much less expensive.

Dogs have a well-deserved reputation as our best friends and, in fact, humans domesticated dogs before any other species. Dogs, especially large breeds, can consume an impressive amount of food. Buying this food in bulk quantities online is much more affordable that buying it one bag at a time from a regular store.

Online shopping does not eliminate one of the most fun aspects of shopping for a pet: impulse buys. Pet owners tend to develop a detailed knowledge of what their pets like and are usually able to tell immediately what kinds of toys would capture their interest. Online shopping for pet supplies often entails a stop over to the toys section to see what a beloved cat or dog might find exciting . Having an extra treat in the box is fun for the pet and the owner alike.

The convenience of having these items delivered to your home instead of having to drive them back yourself cannot be overstated. This is the appeal of most online shopping, the item is ordered and no further action is needed. It shows up within a convenient amount of time and, in most cases, combining the shipping on many items can save money.

Shopping for pet supplies at the usual big box stores can be time consuming, more expensive than one might think and something of a hassle. There’s often a long line, slow service and limited choices in the products available. If you’re going to do something for your pet, it makes more sense to skip this chore, order the supplies they need online and use the time you gain to spend a little extra time with your pet. More than anything, pets want affection and attention, the same things they give to us.

Dog food should always be nutritious so that it can help strengthen his bones and immune system and help him to grow. There are many different types of dog food available at any of the stores specializing in dog supplies.

The first and foremost thing to understand about feeding dogs is that whenever you introduce a new variety of food you need to do it slowly so that your dog can get accustomed to it gradually. If you feed your dog extra food then he might end up having an upset stomach, diarrhea in severe cases, vomiting, constipation, and excess gas.

Dogs have a type of bacteria in their intestine that helps them to digest food. Any sudden changes in their food can bring different and definite changes in the type of bacteria and this might disrupt their ability to digest dog food and as a result upsets their intestine. Hence when you feed your dog a new food or a diet ensure that it is given to him on gradual basis. Let your dog grow fond of his food!

It is hence recommended that you should switch to any new food only over a gradual period of 7-10 days. For example: you can make a food mixture that will contain 75% of the old food and 25% of the new food and then you can feed the mixture to your dog for at least 3 days so that he can get used to it. After the initial 3 days, you can feed him a mixture having 50% old food and 50% new food for another 3 days and then finally make it a 25% old food and 75% new food ratio. Dogs will be more comfortable with this kind of a progression. Nutritious food for dogs is a part of dog supplies and you can find it in a pet store.

While buying dog supplies from a Pet food store, always check the label as it will contain important information. In order to find quality dog food, you need to look for the following:

1. Brand Name and Manufacturer: One of the important facts to be considered is the reputation of a pet food manufacturer. Reputable dog food manufacturers will follow the high quality standards and other norms. The overall quality of dog food is based on the research and scientific experiments that have been conducted to get the particular quality of dog food.

2. Nutrient Guarantees: There are certain nutrient guarantees that are required by all manufacturers and has to be displayed on the dog food label. This is that section of a label, which will offer a minimum guarantee for fat and protein as well as maximum guarantee for fiber and moisture.

3. Nutritional Adequacy Statement: This is a statement that will tell you if the dog food product will offer a balanced and complete nutrition or not. It will also indicate if the dog food is for a particular life stage or can be taken by dogs of all ages.

Listing of Ingredients: Most of the ingredients in a particular dog food will be listed in the descending order according to weight. Ingredients will include some of the most important nutrients like protein, fat, vitamins as well as minerals.

Your New Puppy: Must Haves For Your Dog

Posted by admin on 21/02/10 in dog supplies

Now that you’ve decided to get a puppy or dog, the next few weeks will be busy and at times, more than a little bit crazy. That’s why it’s important to plan in advance for the arrival of your new pet. If possible, get as many necessities ready before your puppy comes home.

The Basics

Travel crate: Even if you don’t plan on crate training your dog, consider the benefits of owning a crate for other reasons, like transporting an ill or injured puppy to the veterinarian.

Food and water bowls: If you have a puppy, keep the bowls low and shallow. Tip-proof works well, too. As they grow, you’ll likely need to upgrade to larger dishes to accommodate your pet’s size.

Food: Choose an age-appropriate food. Ask your vet or local pet store for recommendations if you’re not sure what kind to purchase. Remember that high quality dog food keeps your puppy healthier and happier.

Collar: Pick a collar that fits properly now. You can always upgrade later if necessary.

Leash: A six-foot lead works well. Choose the right thickness and strength for your dog. A Chihuahua’s needs are very different from the needs of a Rottweiler.

ID tag: As one of the first things people search for when finding a stray dog, an ID tag can help make sure your puppy makes it home safely. At a minimum, have your phone number engraved on the tag.

Grooming supplies: Different breeds require different levels of grooming. However, every pup can benefit from a good weekly brushing. It’s also a great way to have quiet, bonding time with your new dog.

Housebreaking supplies: Even adult dogs have accidents, so be prepared with good cleaning supplies.

Veterinarian: If you don’t have a favorite vet already, ask family, friends and neighbors for a recommendation. Have an appointment scheduled within the first few days of bringing your puppy home, so your vet can check for worms, other health conditions, and start her vaccination regimen.

The Extras

Obedience classes: Every dog can benefit from learning some basic obedience skills.

Puppy treats: Yummy treats are the perfect reward when you’re working on obedience. Or for when they’re just being adorable.

Toys: Chew toys help satisfy your new puppy’s teething needs. If you’d like to teach your dog to retrieve, look at purchasing a few balls, but make sure they’re not so small that your dog chokes. A lot of people swear by Kong, an awesome rubber toy you stuff with treats to keep your new pal busy.

Sour apple spray: Use this product to spray on spots your puppy loves to chew on. It’s a terrific deterrent for naughty puppies.

Baby gates: Want to keep your dog in one area of your house? Use baby gates to corral him. Let’s face it; for a lot of us, dogs are our babies anyway!

Dog house: If your pup will spend any time outdoors, he’ll love having his own little house. Fill it with great chew toys and a cozy blanket, and it will be the perfect home away from home.

Doggie door: Training your dog to use a doggie door when she needs to go outdoors makes life easier for you and your pal.

Clothing: Depending on where you live, sweaters or snow boots may be required outdoor gear for your dog.

Now that you have the basics on hand, don’t forget the most essential items for your new puppy: lots of hugs, kisses, and sweet talk. Best of all, they’re free!

One of the most essential commodities for dogs that you can purchase when looking for pet supplies is the dogs bed. The dogs bed will not only provide comfort to your pet when they sleep but also provide them with the much needed rest especially when they are recovering from an illness or an injury.

One of the important things that you need to consider while buying a bed is the way your dog or cat or any other pet sleeps. A dog bed is mostly required for dogs and cats only, although you can buy them for rabbits and some of the other smaller dogs too.

The second most important thing to understand is that a dog bed will be different for a dog and different for a cat. Normally, what you use for your dog will not be used for your cat. You can find dog beds at various stores offering other pet supplies and also online. One of the good things is that you will find a lot of variety when it comes to dog beds including the very popular heated beds. The heated beds have grown in popularity because of the fact that they have a heating element that will keep the bed warm in the winters and will be comfortable and relaxing for your pet. You can choose from a heated orthopedic bed to a heated thermo dog bed. Most of the beds are available in three sizes, which are:

· Small: 19″x24″ â?? The small dog bed can take weights of up to 20lbs

· Medium: 26″x29″ - The medium dog bed can take weights of up to 40lbs

· Large: 36×38″ - The large dog bed can take weights of up to 60lbs

Another type of popular dog bed found in pet supplies is the round bed. This is a perfect bed for dogs that like to cuddle up when they sleep and for cats that love to sleep with their legs thrown apart. This dog bed is available in three sizes for dogs and they are:

· Medium: 36 inches - The medium dog bed can take weights of up to 50lbs

· Large: 42 inches - The large dog bed can take weights of up to 80lbs

· Extra Large: 52 inches - The extra large dog bed can take weights of up to 140lbs

You can also get these beds in different combinations of colour and design like blue polyester suede that will look neat and even go with the overall décor of your home. The important aspects that needs to be considered while buying a dog bed include the size of your pet, the amount of space in the room, the number of pet you have, their weights, if you need separate pet beds or a single one, the colours, do you need a simple dog bed or a heated bed etc.

Many pet supplies stores, in the high street or online, now sell pet beds that are raised from the ground. These beds allow the dog or cat the comfort of support without cold from sleeping on the floor. Many owners now agree that their dogâ??s mobility significantly improved after using a raised pet bed.

Others may probably think that it is a dirty and an unwanted job to groom their dogs. They may be true in one sense, but you should learn to enjoy this task. When you groom and care for your dogs with the use of dog grooming supplies then you actually spend time with your pet dog building the bond between the two of you.

Right dog grooming supplies are keys in making your dog feel better

It is more like a bonding time for you and the dog. And your pet will not see the dog grooming supplies in your hand as a punishment and a boring time for him but rather he will see your dog grooming supplies and the time off as an important time for him to be loved, maintained and showered with attention.

So the next time you will be tasked to groom the familyâ??s pet dog, see that as an opportunity for you and the dog to bond and a way as well for you to show how your pet dog is valued in the family.

Adopt a good grooming system with the use of top dog grooming supplies

Grooming the pet dog is not all about washing him and combing the hair. There are a lot of details that come into play as well, and some very specific dog grooming supplies should be in hand. With the right dog grooming supplies, then you get to ensure that your pet dog is not only clean, looking and feeling fresh but healthy as well.

These listed objectives can be brought about by the right and suggested good grooming system. If you are new in this kind of care for the pet dog with the use of dog grooming supplies, then let this be your little guide for you when you share your time with your dog.

The basic things that you can do to your dog with the use of dog grooming supplies are to ensure that you brush him out completely to take off dirt and to wash him. First thing is to brush out the dog where you need to remove the mats and the tangles. When these mats and tangles arenâ??t removed, then they will be harder to take off once these are already wet. There will be dog grooming products that you can use to make it possible. Bathing with the use of shampoo and other dog grooming supplies is critical. You need to ensure that before you proceed with bathing, all necessary dog grooming supplies that will be used in bathing should be within your reach. Examples of dog grooming supplies that you will need when bathing the dog include your shampoo, conditioner, rinsing hose and his towel.

Blow-dry and pedicure your dog too with dog grooming supplies

Blow-dry the dog completely right after bathing in order to avoid diseases. If you want to take a step further, you can pedicure the pet with the use of specific dog grooming supplies. Head trim may be done too with the use of other dog grooming supplies. In fact you can a lot for your dog; all you need to have is time and the right dog grooming supplies.

I really want my parents to get me a dog.
I’m trying to convince them by telling them that I’d pay for all of the supplies I need.
So I need to know how much everything would cost.
It would be great if you can actually list the things I’d need.

BTW i’m 11 years old
the "average" cost
great answer Siobhán
thanks for all the great answers :) ok maybe I wouldn’t pay for EVERYTHING
how about a german shepard?

It averages around $1000 per year for most pets, and is somewhat dependent on the size of the dog. For example, small dogs eat less than large ones, and medications that are sold by weight of the dog (like heartworm prevention and flea control) are slightly less expensive for small dogs. So are crates, beds, toys and fencing for your yard (you’d need 6 foot fencing for most dogs over 40 pounds, while a 4 foot fence would contain a toy breed very safely.)

So the actual total cost is probably going to be beyond your capacity to pay, However, I think it’s very responsible of you to want to pay what you can of the dog’s care and hopefully your parents are impressed with your desire to contribute in this way. What you may want to do is come up with a monthly amount of money that you think you can earn and agree to give that to your parents each month to help out with the costs of the dog. That’s a very reasonable solution for a young person.

Even though you can’t pay for everything on your own, knowing what will be needed should impress your folks as it shows you are serious enough about a dog to have done some research! It’s very hard to put prices on most of these without knowing the size of dog or the state you live in (which you shouldn’t need to share with us.)

So here’s a list of the very basics:
-Crate
-Feeding bowls
-Toys
-Leash
-Collar or harness
-ID tag
-Annual vet visit and vaccinations ( and most years you will have a visit or two in between as the dog eats something or gets sick)
-Monthly heartworm preventative
-Monthly Flea protection
-Food
-Treats
-Annual dog license (this is usually $20 or less)
-Obedience Classes
-Boarding or a pet sitter when you go on vacation
-Cost of buying the dog itself. If you get it from a shelter, it will probably already be spayed or neutered and also microchipped. If you buy the dog from a breeder, you will often have to spay or neuter and microchip the dog yourself.

Obviously some of these expenses, like crates, leashes, bowls, spaying, etc. are incurred in the first year and then they’re under control for a long time. The first year is always expensive though because of the set-up costs, the spaying, the training, etc.

Good luck!

My teacher wants me to make my own business plan about a dog supplies, and i dont know how to do it. =\

Ask yourself:
What is my product? (obviously dog supplies)
What is my product portfolio?
Who are my customers?
Who are my suppliers?
How much starting captital do I need?
How do I finance it?
What are my recurring costs?
Do I need employees?
Do I need licenses?
Do I need to register for a fictitious name?
Will I run it as a sole proprietor ship or as a a corporation?
How will people learn about my store?
How long will it take for my store to return a profit?
Who is my competition?
Why should customers buy from me instead of them?
What are my strengths, weakness, opportunities and threats?
What is my mission statement?

You answer those question in an essay format and you got yourself a business plan.
